Mac dictation, without the cleanup tax
Voxbit is a local-first dictation app for macOS. Talk the way you actually think, then get formatted text that is ready to paste or save.
Spoken input
Um, I think we should change the API retry logic so it retries failed requests three times with exponential backoff, but actually, no—let’s only retry network errors and 429s, not every failed request. And can you add logging around each attempt, including the request ID? Also, I was going to say keep the current timeout, but let’s increase it from ten to fifteen seconds because the model endpoint is sometimes slow in staging.
Clean output · 75%
Update the API retry logic to retry only network errors and 429s, up to three times with exponential backoff. Log each attempt with the request ID. Increase the timeout from 10 to 15 seconds because the model endpoint is sometimes slow in staging.
Remove the false start and filler while preserving the full implementation context.
Free during beta. No account. Local-first.
How it works
Cmd + Shift + Space starts or stops recording from any app.
Pause, backtrack, or change your mind. Voxbit keeps the thought together.
Use the cleaned result in the active app, or save a formatted Markdown note.
Fits where you already think
Say the reply once instead of typing it, rereading it, and rewriting it.
Turn the messy context in your head into a structured prompt before it reaches the cursor.
Capture it before it disappears, format it, and save it where you will find it again.
The same spoken thought can stay close to your wording or compress all the way down.
Keep the complete thought while removing filler and fixing readability.
Remove false starts and repetition while preserving your tone and context.
Turn the thought into a concise brief that is ready to send.
Keep only the decisions and essential points someone needs to act on.
Profiles
Choose a profile right from the record button before you speak.
Messaging, coding, writing, and note-taking can each start with the right cleanup context.
Message profile selected. Ready to record.
Capture & Save
Some recordings should paste immediately, while others should be formatted and saved.
Switch from paste mode to capture mode when the thought belongs in a note. Capture & Save writes the formatted result to a Markdown file.
Cleaned text is ready to paste.
History
Every session can be saved locally as Markdown with the original input and cleaned output side by side.
Revisit it later, search it, or use it as context when the same work comes back around.

Okay, so the main thing is...
Local-first
Recordings, transcription, and history stay on your Mac.
Optional cleanup uses your OpenAI or Anthropic key.
Your saved history remains part of your local workflow.
The practical details
Yes. Voxbit is free during the Mac beta, with no account required.
Recording, transcription, history, and saved Markdown work locally. Optional AI cleanup and compression require an internet connection to your chosen provider.
Voxbit records and transcribes audio on your Mac. If you enable optional AI cleanup, the transcript text is sent to the provider connected with your own key; the raw recording is not sent for cleanup.
The current beta supports your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key for optional cleanup and compression.
Voxbit is designed to paste into the focused text field in the Mac apps where you already write, including messaging, editors, and AI tools.
Voxbit adds cleanup, four compression levels, quick-access profiles, Capture & Save, and local Markdown history with the original and cleaned text together.
The beta supports Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later.
Sessions stay in Voxbit's local history. Capture & Save profiles can also write the formatted output to a Markdown folder you choose.
Not today. The current Voxbit beta is built for Mac.
